Objectives
BepiColombo, an Interdisciplinary Mission to Mercury, is the first joint large-scale planetary exploration project by ESA and JAXA involving scientists from many countries in Europe and Japan. The BepiColombo mission is composed of two orbiters: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO). Observations of various aspects of the planet, such as the space environment, the magnetic field, the surface composition, and the geology, are expected to lead to a synthetic view of the mysteirous planet Mercury. The BepiColombo Science Working Team (SWT) will monitor the project progress and make advices to the project team on all scientific aspects of the mission. The SWT meetings have been held every autumn and the 8th BepiColombo SWT Meeting will be held at "Kanazawa Kageki-Za (The Kanazawa Theatre)" in Kanazawa, Japan from Thursday, September 8 to Saturday, September 10, 2011.

In the former half of the same week, the 3rd MESSENGER - Bepi Colombo Joint Workshop will be held in Kyoto, Japan. Since the very fresh results of MESSENGER in the orbit around the planet (since March 2011) will be presented just before the SWT, this SWT8 sould serve to give boost to the final mission preparation phase and the science operation planning of the observation phase to come.
